Infertility and Modern Family Building

Infertility is defined as the inability to achieve a successful pregnancy, based on factors such as a patient’s medical, sexual, and reproductive history, age, physical findings, or diagnostic tests.¹ One-third of infertility cases are attributed to male factors, another third to female factors, and the remaining third to a combination of both or unknown causes.² Among couples facing infertility, 85% have an identifiable cause, while 15% are classified as having “unexplained infertility.”³

Unmet need

A timely fertility evaluation is crucial for couples if the female partner is over 35 and has been trying to conceive for six months, or under 35 and trying for one year.² In the U.S, only 1 in 8 women aged 15 to 49 years receive infertility services.³

Among U.S. women who met the medical criteria for infertility between 2013-2016:

• • 84.9% were classified as ‘in need of treatment,’ but nearly 2 out of 3 women (58.1%) did not discuss pregnancy options with their healthcare provider.
• • 15.9% were classified as ‘not in need of treatment’.⁴

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) & Modern Family Building

Many patients on the path to parenthood explore various treatment options to help them start or grow their family, often turning to assisted reproductive technology (ART). Assisted reproductive technology (ART), including in vitro fertilization (IVF), has seen a steady increase in utilization in the U.S. over the past decade.

Currently, IVF accounts for approximately 2.5% of annual births.⁵ IVF has become a key treatment option not only for infertility but also for LGBTQ+ individuals, single parents by choice, and those seeking fertility preservation before cancer treatment.
